Shikakai, also known as the hair fruit, has been used traditionally as a hair care ingredient for centuries now. The Ayurvedic herb is often used as a shampoo replacement because of its excellent cleansing properties. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, K, and D, which help nourish hair and keep it healthy. The dried shikakai fruit is collected from the shrub in the month of January and healthy fruits are segregated to sell in market.
The fruit is commonly known as Indian soapberry or washnut. It is a deciduous tree that grows in the lower foothills and midhills of Koraput. This is traditionaly used for removing head lice off the scalp and hair cleansing materials since ages. This fruit harvested during the summer and dried for further use. Till now the villages Goldsmiths and Brass-Smiths use it as policing material to give extra shining to the gold and brass articles.
